Is Hyaluronic Acid Actually Drying Out Your Skin?

“Hyaluronic acid can actually make your skin drier.”

You’ve probably heard this claim before.

It sounds alarming especially when hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular hydrating ingredients in skincare.

So… is it true?

Not quite.

And the internet may have oversimplified this one.

First, What Does Hyaluronic Acid Actually Do?

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, an ingredient that helps attract and hold onto water.

It’s naturally present in our bodies and is widely used in skincare because of its ability to support hydration and give the skin a plumper, smoother appearance.

So where did the idea that it dries out your skin come from?

The “Hyaluronic Acid Steals Water From Your Skin” Claim

One popular explanation online goes something like this:

In a dry environment, hyaluronic acid can’t pull enough moisture from the air, so it starts pulling water out of the deeper layers of your skin instead, leaving your skin even drier.

It sounds convincing.

But it’s an oversimplification of how skincare formulations and skin hydration actually work.

Your hyaluronic acid serum doesn’t simply decide whether to pull water from the atmosphere or “steal” it from your skin.

Skincare products are complete formulations containing water and other ingredients, and the way a humectant behaves depends on the entire formula and the rest of your routine.

So Why Can Skin Feel Dry After Using Hyaluronic Acid?

This is where things get interesting.

If you’re applying a lightweight hydrating serum but not following it with enough moisturising or occlusive support, your routine may simply not be doing enough to reduce water loss from your skin.

That can leave you thinking:

“Hyaluronic acid doesn’t work for me.”

When the real issue may be how your hydration is being layered and sealed.

This is why at Beverleyskin, we don’t look at hydration as a single-ingredient story.

More Hyaluronic Acid Isn’t Necessarily Better

Another misconception?

The higher the percentage, the better the serum.

Not necessarily.

Skincare isn’t a competition to see who can put the biggest percentage on the bottle.

Different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid can behave differently within a formulation, which is why the overall formulation matters more than chasing one impressive-looking number.

Our Bliss 01 Serum contains 8 types of hyaluronic acid, formulated as part of a multi-level approach to hydration.

But we still don’t expect one serum to do everything.

Hydrate, Then Seal

Think of your routine in layers.

Bliss 01 Serum → hydration

Bloom 19 Emulsion → moisturising support

Lumière 96 Cream → helps complete and seal your routine

This is the philosophy behind Beverleyskin:

Hydration first. Barrier always.

Hyaluronic acid isn’t the villain.

But expecting one trendy ingredient to fix every skin concern?

That might be the real skincare myth.

Go bare, glow everywhere.
